The Sopris Residence

Aspen / Roaring Fork Valley, Colorado
Type: Single-Family
Phase: Completed

The Sopris Residence sits as a quiet perch overlooking a dramatic escarpment within the Colorado landscape. The residence serves as an exercise in "warm minimalism where the weight of quarried stone acts as an aperture to incredible views of Mt. Sopris.

The site, once cleared by 19th-century cattle ranchers for grazing, has been allowed to return to its native state. The home is deliberately positioned at the transition of one of these native areas acting as if it were another geologic feature emerging from the landscape. Its muted earthy material palette of stone, plaster, and wood reinforces this sense of quiet continuity.

The Sopris Residence was developed for high-performance, sustainable building.  Built to rigorous Passive House standards, the home features a highly insulated, airtight, and well-detailed building-envelope capable of withstanding the harsh Colorado climate.  The residence is considered “net-zero ready” since the minimal energy footprint to operate its fully electric systems can be offset with the addition of photovoltaic panels.
