The Fields

Willits, Colorado

The Fields Development is a thoughtfully conceived residential community with twenty-nine single-family residences and six duplexes in the Roaring Fork Valley, home to Aspen, the town of Snowmass and other wonderful bedroom mountain towns.

It is planned around the way the valley is lived: trails and the river close by, the ski mountains up the valley, and Willits Town Center about a mile away. Homes of modern, contextual architecture sit on lots of a quarter to half an acre, set around a shared landscape of meadow, ponds and mature cottonwoods at the heart of the neighborhood.

The Valley

The Fields is at the middle of the Roaring Fork Valley, which runs forty miles from Glenwood Springs up to Aspen. Basalt and Carbondale are the nearest towns. Up the valley are Snowmass Village and its ski mountain, the Aspen airport and Aspen, with Mount Sopris to the south.

Setting

The Fields is next to Willits, in the mid-valley. Crown Mountain Park is a third of a mile to the east by the trail along Valley Road. To the south, open land runs down to the Roaring Fork River, with the Rio Grande Trail beyond it. Willits Town Center is approximately a mile away, to the south-east.

Thirty-five lots, each a quarter to half an acre (0.24 to 0.50 acres).

An internal walking trail, eight feet wide and 1,920 feet long, runs through the middle of the neighborhood and ties every home to the open space.

Seven acres, 36.1% of the site, stay open, with internal walking trails along a meandering ditch and new ponds. The mature cottonwood and spruce are retained.

Twenty-nine of the lots hold single-family residences.

Six lots hold duplexes, with price-capped homes for sale.

The Fields

Landscape

The landscape is designed as the centre of the neighborhood. A meandering ditch and two new ponds run through the middle of the plan, an internal trail network follows them, and the mature cottonwood and spruce on the site are kept.
